The Emotions – Flowers
A perfect album. Not a single flaw.
Vocally, musically, lyrically and spiritually sound.
Immaculate production from Earth Wind & Fire.
It’s also the first album I ever owned, so there is some bias.
While visiting family in LA, my dad and uncle were headed to the liquor store. Asked if I wanted anything, I said, “Yes. The Emotions’ “Flowers” album.
I was quite surprised when, upon their return, my dad presented me with a brand new, shrink wrapped copy. Things like this never happened at home. That might be when I fell in love with LA.
My teenage cousin, Jackie Mae, let me use the record player in her bedroom. I listened to that album over and over for hours. I learned the lyrics without trying. I felt the feelings in my soul.
So, yeah, I’m biased. That bias doesn’t change the fact that “Flowers” is a perfect album.
If there is any album that should make you think of me, it’s this one.
More than “Meat Is Murder”. More than “Verve Remixed”. More than “Dirty Mind”, “New Traditionalist” or “Peace Beyond Passion”.
