Just sorted and loaded the finyl record into The Arsenal. That was a lot of work, ya’ll. I’m gonna hop into bed.

Someone asked why there is a picture of a wallaby on the flyer for JOEY! “A joey is a baby kangaroo, right?”
Well, yes, Someone, baby kangaroos are called “joey”, but so are all baby marsupials, including the young wallaby I swiped off the interwebz. Whether kangaroo, koala, possum or even sugar-glider the younglings are all Joey!
Does this mean JOEY! may feature cover stars beyond our little wallaby friend? Well, of course! I’ve already planned for others. Some of whom aren’t even marsupial!
Did you know that there are over 300 species of marsupial in the world? While 70% of marsupials can be found in Australia, it is believed that their ancestors migrated from North America. The earliest marsupial fossil was found in Montana. Today the only marsupial naturally found in North America (Southern Canada, West Coast & Southeastern US) is the opossum. Central & South America host about 70 species of marsupial, compared to Australasia with over 250. There are no native marsupials in Africa or Europe.
There are no opossums in Australia/New Zealand/et al, but plenty of possums … though neither are known for jumping.
Also, there are plenty things that are known for jumping … *tee-hee*

Joey! is less than a week away, and I’m hopping with excitement!
Still going through records, pulling for variety, eclecticism, and dance-ability. Do I really wanna bring the Patsy Cline? Yes, I do… but should I? Going to pieces trying to decide between the album version of that Stephanie Mills track, or the 12 inch remix. Is it possible I’ve played Hercules & Love Affair too much? Which Thompson Twins song do I love the most? That Zap Mama is an unexpected bop, Fela is a god, Janelle Monet a High Priestess … I want to party with them all. My living room is a mess of records. Oh, NO! Is that Devo? I’m sworn to bring Sylvester & Prince, under threat of getting the switch! Switch – The Best Beat In Town! Nomad is Just A Groove. MAW mix of what!? Ugh. The options!
(Bit of an aside, but it seems we’ve tapped into the zeitgeist with JOEY!’s format as, at the Minneapolis Music Summit held on May 10 at the Green Room, the notion of expanding beyond one genre popped up a few times.)
Looking forward to seeing you all at Zen Arcade Saturday, May 17th!

Hi, Mixcloud.
As long as I’ve been a Mixcer, you should at least grandfather me in, and not require me to pay a fee to maintain access to all of the content I’ve uploaded to your platform. Not to be ungrateful, but would you be where you are without us old-heads from back in the day? I know I’m not a founder, or anything but in the spirit of music, couldn’t we open source these mixes? At least, for the children? Heck, for The Elders who may have lost access, if they ever had it in the first place. I’m not trying to make a profit off of anyone else’s work. Just wanna share The Love as widely as possible.
Although … hearing and remembering the … ahem … ‘quality’ of this recording … maybe this set should be lost and forgotten (the more things change, indeed).

This was as much fun as the first time!
I remembered to bring my Tascam, and I remembered to hit “record”… but I forgot to switch the input to “line” … so, the external mic captured all of the ambient sounds, and I have a recording of the set with the chatter of the crowd laid over it. 🥲
The sound quality is surprisingly good, considering… but yeah, we don’t want the chatter
I’ll use the same selections for an upcoming episode of Groovement for a chatter free recording.

A poem
Grieving is weird
Written upon the death of, Anais Melson.
It hits you in waves
The first wave is numbing
can last for seconds
or days
weeks
years
forever
never know how long it’ll last
It’s passage is always shocking
Catches you unaware
Leaving you in tears
the next wave …
Tears
Uncontrollable
Inexplicable tears
I don’t understand their intensity
their ferocity
My body heaves
Sighs
come out as screams
Mourning is like a flame
that starts at your feet
reaches your heart
let’s itself out through your head
a simmer
a rage.
It passes
leaving silence
making way for the next waves
of numbness
of tears
the waves of memories
unfolding
good times
bad times
that made up a lifetime lost
And the tears come again
with quiet feeling
reflection
sincere sense of loss
You tell yourself
“Life goes on”.
and
life, somehow,
goes on.
Shared for all who experience loss.
