18 Things

Eighteen years ago today, July 2, 2007 (nearly to the hour as I type), my flight landed at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport.

Despondent, yet excited, I was slightly tickled by the newspaper headline decrying the local traffic problem while displaying an image of (to my fresh-from-Los-Angeles eyes) a sparsely populated section of highway.

No doubt, I was in a new world.

I moved here under duress. A sudden loss of employment had me facing homelessness. Rather than become unhoused, I accepted an offer of respite in Northeast Minneapolis from a once dear friend.

I’d no intention of staying longer than two years.

I found employment rather quickly, though not quickly enough for my once dear friend, who kicked me out as soon as I announced I got the job.

I moved to Saint Paul to be closer to work. Less than a year later, I moved back to Minneapolis to be closer to a social life.

Anyhoo… a two-year plan has become nearly two decades. “Minnesota: Who Knew?” is a phrase I’ve uttered many times over the years.

It has not been easy. It has not been all fun. But it has been … continues to be … A Blessing.

This year, for my Minnesotaversary, in no particular order, I present: 18 Things

  • Walking alone after a heavy snowfall

So silly.

Thought lack of recognition

Equated to failure.

Finally figured out the answer to the riddle.

Heard or not,

The sound is made.

The World To Be

Never before have I heard my internal monologue expressed so clearly by another.

I presented this argument to The Stranger, as I debated coming out to my employer in 1988, just before a trip to the UK.

Picking me up from the airport 6 months later, Jake eagerly informed me. “Dan Savage ripped you a new ass-hole!”

People just don’t understand me.

Respecting and appreciating Dan’s opinion, I came out to my co-workers at the close of a staff meeting after having heard the word “faggot” used derogatorily during said.

I do regret “Love Shack” becoming a wedding song (much like I regret most wedding songs).

Rise & Remember Festival May 23-25
Y’all Shoulda Been There

Put aside the politic every once in a while

Listen in metaphor

“On the 7th Day, He rested.”

A lot of y’all were triggered by that.
you might need a 7th Day.

Creating enemies of friends
over words
newly re-defined

Fighting over flags and meaning

Divisive
over that
designed
to Unify.

Obtusely
Indifferently
Ignorantly
Disrespectful

Generations
pitted ‘gainst one another

for entertainment

The politic is damaging & damning
There is healing to be had

On a 7th Day.

Ya’ll shoulda been there.

That’s not a Kangaroo!?

•May 15, 2025 • Leave a Comment

Someone asked why there is a picture of a wallaby on the flyer for JOEY! “A joey is a baby kangaroo, right?”

Well, yes, Someone, baby kangaroos are called “joey”, but so are all baby marsupials, including the young wallaby I swiped off the interwebz. Whether kangaroo, koala, possum or even sugar-glider the younglings are all Joey!
Does this mean JOEY! may feature cover stars beyond our little wallaby friend? Well, of course! I’ve already planned for others. Some of whom aren’t even marsupial!

Did you know that there are over 300 species of marsupial in the world? While 70% of marsupials can be found in Australia, it is believed that their ancestors migrated from North America. The earliest marsupial fossil was found in Montana. Today the only marsupial naturally found in North America (Southern Canada, West Coast & Southeastern US) is the opossum. Central & South America host about 70 species of marsupial, compared to Australasia with over 250. There are no native marsupials in Africa or Europe.

There are no opossums in Australia/New Zealand/et al, but plenty of possums … though neither are known for jumping.

Also, there are plenty things that are known for jumping … *tee-hee*
